Sr. Josephine Ortner of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, New Windsor, entered eternal life at Mount St. Joseph on December 16, 2021, at age 93.
Sr. Josephine was born in New York City on April 5, 1928. Her brothers were Charles and Frederick. Sister was baptized, received First Communion, and was confirmed in St. Joseph parish in Manhattan.
Sister was educated at Manhattan College, St. John University, Fordham, and Wesleyan University.
In 1946, Sister entered the Sisters of the Presentation at Mt. St. Joseph in New Windsor, NY and at reception received the name, Sr. Mary Conrad. She taught at Holy Rosary and St. Frances of Rome schools in the Bronx and at St. Paul’s school in Yonkers. From 1954 to 1967 Sister taught at St. Michael’s in Manhattan. In 1967, Sister returned to her baptismal name of Josephine and was assigned to teach at Burke Catholic H.S. in Goshen, NY. Sister taught science classes until she was appointed principal in 1983. Sister Josephine served as principal from 1983 to 1999 when she retired. In retirement, Sister assisted at the Burke Catholic Learning Center. In 2009, Sister took up residence at Mt. St. Joseph in New Windsor, NY.
Sr. Josephine was pre-deceased by her parents Charles and Josephine Ortner and her brothers Charles and Frederick. Sister is survived by her nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at Mount St. Joseph, 64 Presentation Way, New Windsor, NY on Sunday, December 19th beginning at 3:30 pm. There will be a wake service at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 20th at 11:00 am, with a burial to follow at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.
