It is with great pleasure that we bring you news of a new initiative for our congregation: providing Catholic school scholarships to young people in need in our area.
Called to the New York area in 1874 to educate Catholic children in Manhattan, our sisters have long held the belief that education is fundamental to providing the tools to build a solid foundation for the future. Our foundress, Nano Nagle, also held this belief as she educated young people in the lanes of Cork, Ireland, in the 1700s during the time of penal laws.
We have carried on this tradition of Catholic education, serving as educators in Catholic schools in the region for well over 100 years. In recent years many of our sisters have been called to serve other areas of need, but our commitment to Catholic education is as strong as ever. To promote Catholic education and Catholic values in our youth, we have established a Catholic school scholarship fund dedicated to helping those in need to access a Catholic education in their area.
We invite you to partner with us in this effort. Your donation will help us to grow this scholarship fund and provide more young people with opportunities to build the solid foundation provided by our Catholic schools.
Together we can carry on the legacy of Nano Nagle and so many Presentation Sisters who came before us. We will continue to shine the light of Nano in our world as we partner in this mission to bring hope to those in need.
Support Our Commitment to Catholic Education
Nora Cronin Presentation Academy (NCPA) is a private, Catholic middle school serving girls of low-income families in the lower Hudson Valley. The school is located in Newburgh, NY and serves students in grades 5th-8th. In January of 2000, the Sisters of the Presentation, New Windsor, led by Sister Nora Cronin, began exploring the possibility of opening a grade school for underserved and low-income students in Newburgh, New York. After many meetings and several years of work the school began to take shape and fund raising began.
Today, NCPA has 15 students per grade, 60 students total each year. There is a waiting list for enrollment as the need for education far surpasses NCPA’s capacity. May of 2018 saw students of the first ever 5th grade class to attend NCPA graduate from a four-year college, a very proud moment for all.
Nora Cronin Presentation Academy believes education is the pathway out of poverty. All students meet the federal standards for free or reduced lunch programs. While the cost of education is substantial (over $10,000 per student), students are charged no tuition to attend NCPA. To help offset costs, parents are asked to partner with the school by helping to serve meals, clean, perform small repairs and maintenance.
