Last Friday Sister Yliana Hernandez was invited to speak at the Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh as part of the "Together in Welcome. Faith Communities for Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers." The event also featured County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan and area pastors.
At the end of Sister Yliana's address, she shared a quote by Martin Buber, a great Jewish philosopher and theologian: “Our own humanity is diminished to the extent that we encounter others as objects rather than subjects.”
The event was followed by the Hebrew Erev Sabbat Service, Sabbat Candle Blessings and refreshments. It was a beautiful celebration of all faith traditions coming together to stand for our immigrant sisters and brothers.
